City Honors Newcomer |
|
Charlotte, NC 2/15/98 - In just a matter of months following my arrival from Boston, for some unknown reason we won the hearts and admiration of the citizens of Charlotte. At a ceremony at Charlotte City Hall, Mayor Pat McCary bestowed upon our family an honor usually befitting slain sanitation engineers. Old County Road 26a in northeastern Mecklenburg county now bears bears our family name for all to see. Having received permission to leave work early to accept his award, I was filled with emotion and was visibly moved by this prestigious honor. At the ceremony, I fought back tears to answer the barrage of questions being hurled at me by the throngs of reporters covering this event. |

"I don't know why the fine citizens of Charlotte picked me for this honor", I said. "I really don't deserve it." Both Fran and Mike nodded in agreement. It was then the Mayor took the microphone away from my trembling hands, looked me square in the eye and said "Andy, you are a model for all that is good. Your personal web site, The Browne Pages, has brought joy and a feeling of personal pride back to everyone who has logged on. It is for that single reason, your name will sit upon that that glorious pole." Too choked up to speak, I humbly accepted the microphone from Mayor McCary. "You know, having my name sit on top of Cloyd Eastfield's is a honor unto itself." Eastfield was killed in a freak accident in March of 1986 when the driver of his garbage truck accidentally crushed him to death while picking up a Pineville Food Lion dumpster. |
